I would have expected that the ball would fly somewhere and hit someone

"I would have expected that the ball would fly somewhere and hit someone," said Bent, laughing. "It was really lucky."

Bent, who accomplished the feat during the middle of his eighth-grade season for the Tigers, admitted that the shot felt good when it left the tee, but he didn't get the sense that something special was about to take place.

"I've hit better shots," said Bent, 14, of Gulf Stream. "But it felt like a good shot. I didn't take a different approach. The contact was better and it looked like it would go more toward the hole."

By reading the greens right and judging the distance of the hole properly, Bent enabled his teammates and athletic director Brad Cubbage to rejoice.

"I never realized I'd witness a hole-in-one," said Cubbage, a first-year golf coach at Trinity Lutheran. "It was great for the morale of the team. It showed that if you put your mind to it, you can do it. We were excited for him."

In that moment , Bent's teammates from the second group—which stood next to the tee box with Cubbage—were the first to offer congratulations. As that was taking place, Tiger players' from the first group were hooting and hollering in celebration on another hole, before joining in the festivities.

"When the first group heard what had happened, they all started screaming," Cubbage said. "That moment in time helped our team. I've seen this done in miniature golf [laughs]. John came out at the beginning of the season and made the changes to his game."

Having a father who has made two hole-in-ones helps.

John works on his game with his dad David and brother Michael, a fourth-grader at Trinity Lutheran School. The trio hone their skills at St. Andrews Club in Delray Beach.

"It's really nice when you get to see it," said David, a tennis pro at St. Andrews who wasn't in attendance at Lakeview Golf Course for John's special moment. "He will remember that forever. I remember watching the Golf Channel on television once, and hearing Bubba Watson say he had never made a hole-in-one. It's a lucky thing that just happens. It's fantastic."

Cubbage was impressed to see Bent's game improve steadily throughout the season, thanks to some instructions from Jason Cunningham, a golf pro from the Delray Dunes Golf and Country Club in Boynton Beach.
